It isn’t talked about much, but women are almost as likely to experience pattern baldness as men. In fact, about a third of women will experience significant hair loss, usually beginning at the onset of menopause. There can be several different potential causes for female hair loss, and there are a few different treatment options available.

Causes of Female Pattern Hair Loss
Female hair loss can be caused by:
- Hormone changes, such as with menopause or thyroid issues
- Androgenetic alopecia
- Medical conditions
- Side effects of medications
- Physical or emotional stress
When you first start to notice significant hair loss, you should visit a doctor right away to determine the cause. You may have a serious medical condition that is causing the hair loss that needs to be treated. Treating the cause of hair loss may stop it completely, whether or not you regain hair.
Treatments for Female Hair Loss
If your female pattern hair loss is due to genetic androgen fluctuations, you have several different potential treatment options. There are two medications that your physician may prescribe that can stop and reverse female hair loss. The first is Minoxidil, or Rogaine. This used to be available by prescription only, but now you can get up to 5 percent solution at any drug store. This can be very effective. But you have to keep using it, or you’ll lose the hair again.
Another medication that can be of assistance is anti-androgens. However, these medications can have some serious side effects, and you have to make sure that you do not become pregnant during your course of treatment. Your doctor will probably prescribe a highly effective form of birth control for use during your treatment.
